Shirley Associate Engineer Austin, TX |
How does it feel to do your job?
Pretty terrific! I get asked to speak to students and groups about corporate philanthropy a lot, and I always start by saying "I have the best job in Austin, Texas."

Just as we strive to be innovative in our business and our technology, we look for innovative ways to engage in the community. By combining volunteerism, financial gifts, leadership and in-kind donations, we look for ways to leverage resources for our community partners, and help them increase capacity through technology. We also give employees the opportunity to leverage company resources for the causes they support with their own time and money. | | What do you feel are the most unique things about Spansion? | We stand out in a crowd - what other company has a purple logo? When our volunteer teams go out into the community in their purple Spansion Community Team tees, they are easy to identify and easy to spot! | | What is the most challenging part of your job here at Spansion? | There are more opportunities for us to partner in the community than we can possibly accept, so often choosing is difficult. However, Spansion has taken a strategic approach to how and where we get involved and invest our resources and that sets the guidelines for making those decisions. | | What is the most memorable moment you've had working at Spansion? | It is tough to name just one memorable moment - seeing the spark that ignites with a student when they participate in an Engineering Week activity, or how an employee feels when she delivers meals to shut-in elders in the neighborhood or hearing about our employees in another part of the world rushing to the aid of victims of a disaster - these are moments that transform us and make work so much more than just a job. | | Describe an interesting project you are working on (or have worked on) at Spansion. | The Empty Bowl Project is a collaboration with the Capital Area Food Bank and a group of local potters to raise money for hungry families in Central Texas. At Spansion we have taken the partnership beyond just a contribution and weeks before the event, employees participate by painting bowls. During the event they help with set-up, clean-up and even track donations on laptop computers to save the agency time after the event. This year we are even donating space to store materials for the project since it has outgrown its previous home. We don't have the largest budget for contributions in the area, but we can still make an impact by being creative and engaged. | | What's the best thing about your manager's work style or your interaction with her/him? | My manager wants to know what I am doing, why I am doing it, and how I am accomplishing my goals, but I never feel like he is micro-managing me. He respects the work that I do and trusts the way I do it. I know he is available for input when I need it, and will redirect me if he thinks I am heading in the wrong direction, but he supports the initiative that I take. I know that if I act with integrity, the results of my work will be relevant to the company and to the community. | | Tell us about the team you work with and what you enjoy most about working with them. | My work team is very small, I am one of two in the whole country. But, my extended work team includes people from almost every group in Austin, and leaders world wide who believe in investing in the community. | | Share your thoughts about Spansion's corporate values (determination, initiative, integrity, and respect for people). | I think the corporate values are critical reminders that we are in a competitive, innovative business that requires the best and brightest working together for the good of our employees, our customers and our communities. |
